UPDATED - Do Animals Have a "Sixth Sense" That Helps Them Avoid Natural Disasters

After the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami/Earthquake many people were found dead, but not very many animals.  This begs the question of whether animals have instincts that help them avoid oncoming natural disasters.  Considering the recent 7.0 earthquake in Haiti, followed by a 6.0 earthquake in Guatemala, and the hundreds of mysterious quakes rattling a portion of Yellowstone National Park, one has to wonder if more serious quakes are to come.  Recently, the famous San Francisco sea lions abandoned their pier.   Today, a 6.0 earthquake occured off the Northern Coast of California.  Is there a chance that the sea lions know something that we don't?

This post, like the rest of them are provided to encourage discussion and to inspire further investigation. In researching this topic, another possible conclusion is that a climate pattern, known as El Niño, has returned to the Pacific this year. El Niño is characterized by warming or cooling of surface waters in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean, and has been linked to a migration of ocean life from the affected areas. Migration of the sea lions' food source could be the actual cause for their departure from the pier.
